Have you ever watched a jogging blind man? It almost sounds like an oxymoron…but I saw one in Portland back in May. He had a sight-enabled friend jogging ahead of him yelling instructions like, “curb!” and “cross NOW!” I began to wonder about the idea of peripheral hearing. Sometimes, I walk along the beach and try to see as far as I can…peripherally with my eyes.
After witnessing this jogging blind man, I decided to experiment with my peripheral hearing. I tried to walk along the beach with my eyes closed, using only sounds as cues. Well, I ended up at one point walking into the water, then tripping over something and falling to my knees. Two bruised shins later, I decided that my peripheral hearing is non-existent. I felt a lot of admiration for that jogging blind man in Portland.
Promise you won’t try that exercise while you are driving! But a great lesson the blind man teaches us about our own senses and how poorly we develop them.
